For EKT, circularity is an operating model rather than a stand-alone sustainability activity. By creating industrial demand for recovered materials, EKT helps connect collection activity with formal processing, manufacturing and end markets.

Environmental Impact

  • EKT recycles approximately 7,320 tonnes of PET annually, recovering discarded bottles and returning valuable materials to productive use.
  • This recycling represents an estimated 12,444 tonnes of avoided CO₂-equivalent emissions annually compared with equivalent virgin PET production.*
  • By turning recovered plastics into raw materials and finished products in Ethiopia, EKT supports cleaner communities and local value creation.
  • Our planned bottle-to-bottle expansion will keep PET in circulation and help reduce reliance on imported virgin PET.

*Emissions savings are indicative lifecycle estimates based on approximately 1.70 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent avoided per tonne of PET recycled, rather than an audited corporate carbon footprint.

Employment & Inclusion

  • EKT employs more than 420 people directly with women representing approximately 80% of the workforce.
  • The wider recycling model also supports collectors, aggregators, transporters, suppliers and other participants across the value chain.
  • Across its upstream and downstream value chains, EKT supports livelihoods for more than 7,000 people, including collectors, aggregators, transporters, suppliers, distributors and artisans.

Within 24 months, EKT aims to increase annual PET recovery and recycling to 37,920 tonnes across two locations, with respective annual targets of 28,920 tonnes and 9,000 tonnes. This includes 14,400 tonnes annually for bottle-to-bottle recycling.

  • Expanded collection and local manufacturing are expected to create more livelihood opportunities across the value chain.
